Robert Buettner's first novel, Orphanage, will forever be one of my all time favorite military science fiction novels. I continued to follow the series as it progressed but none of the subsequent books felt as gripping and raw to me as the first. That's not to say that I dislike the rest of the series but only that Orphanage set an unfairly high standard to live up to. Overkill, the beginning of Buettner's new series, gave me a close approximation of the joy I felt while reading Orphanage.
Overkill opens up on a claustrophobic world called Yavet, where giving birth is considered a capital crime. At first I had trouble getting my bearings but as soon as I understood where the basics of the world I was hooked. Buettner doesn't spend an abundance of time describing Yavet but from the broad brushstrokes he paints a vivd picture that captured my imagination. I have read plenty of sci-fi and this was certainly one of the more original worlds I have experienced. Not much time is spent on Yavet but we are introduced to Jazen, an illegal infant who is cared for by the kind-hearted Orion until he comes of age to join the Legion and leave Yavet behind for good. After a tour with the Legion, Jazen catches a job with an Earthborn communications tycoon hunting for the the most dangerous game in the known universe.
Jazen worked for me very well as a character, in ways that Jason Wander from the original Orphan Series did not. Jazen has a past that he's not too proud of and a future that is drawing to a close. There is some good character interaction and the flashbacks to his stint in the Legion is what really brings Jazen to life for me. The other characters don't stand out as well as Jazen unfortunately. I think both Kit and Cutler could have used a bit more depth. The world of DE-476, also known as Dead End is very well realized. The eco-system of the world is unique and vicious to the point that humans need a main battle tank to take an afternoon stroll. The human colony, known as Eden (rather cliche), could also use some more depth to it however. We are told that the town is a Libertarian Republic that sustains itself be exporting kerosene but other than that you never get a real feel for Eden.
There is some action, though rather less than previous Buettner books. I would consider Overkill more of a science fiction adventure as opposed to military sci-fi, and there's nothing wrong with that. The adventure of the book Buettner handles with style. My main concern is the ending which happens to be rather anti-climactic and drawn out but I enjoyed the book so much I can hardly fault it for this. My only other real concern is that I despise trade paperbacks, but I realize this is no fault of Buettner's. I eagerly await the next Jazen Parker book, Undercurrents, which comes out in July!

The best place to learn more about me and my writing is www.RobertBuettner.com. You will find little from me on Facebook and Twitter, because I exhaust my meager stock of wit and profundity writing my books and stories. If you love the Science Fiction legend Robert Heinlein, critics say I write like him. If you hate Heinlein, my books are totally not like that guy’s. My Enemy’s Enemy mixes a lot of science and a lot of fiction, about World War II and the Nazi nuclear weapons program, with contemporary terrorism. I am as jolly about getting old as you are, and I own more bicycles than a grownup needs. To paraphrase the late, great Anthony Bourdain, I will be here as long as you keep asking or until the whisky runs out. Ask me anything.
