In this article I will show you how to install MPlayer and the multimedia codecs needed for watching movies on Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail.

MPlayer is a video/audio player that suports many codecs and file formats.

Install MPlayer on Ubuntu 13.04:

There is at least one extra codec package available for amd64 and i386 machines that is not available from Debian. On amd64, the package is w64codecs, and on i386, the package is w32codecs. These extra packages provide support for a few rarely used codecs and the only software that makes use of them are xine and mplayer. Install Mplayer Debian Wheezy Raspberry. Debian jessie follows the 2.2.x release branch of VLC. Install vlc, browser-plugin-vlc the usual way you do it. It is possible to install Debian Wheezy using the instructions above. Make sure your system is up to date:

$ sudo apt-get update

Install MPlayer:

$ sudo apt-get install mplayer

Install w32/w64 video codecs and libdvdcss2 in Ubuntu 13.04

The w32codecs/w64codecs offers suport for WMV files and libdvdcss2 is essential for playing encrypted DVDs.

This codecs are not available in the Ubuntu repositories due to licence issues, so I will use the Medibuntu rebos:

Adding the medibuntu repo:

$ sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

Update the system:

$ sudo apt-get update

Add the medibuntu repo’s key:

$ sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring

Update the system again:

$ sudo apt-get update

Install Mplayer On Linux

Install libdvdcss2:

$ sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

Now, depending on your system architecture, install the w32codecs / w64codecs.

For 32 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install --force-yes w32codecs

For 64 bit systems:

$ sudo apt-get install --force-yes w64codecs
